Job Description

The Department of Nursing at Franciscan University of Steubenville (FUS) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor. Candidates at other ranks will also be considered commensurate with experience. The preferred candidate has extensive professional experience that can be applied in the academic environment and a commitment to the responsibilities involved with a full-time faculty role. Franciscan University, founded in 1946 by friars of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Province of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Penance, integrates excellent academic programs with a dynamic faith environment to serve 2,500 students from all 50 states and 17 countries on campus and an additional 1,000 students online. One of only 18 faithfully Catholic universities in the U.S. endorsed by the Cardinal Newman Society, Franciscan University of Steubenville continues to lead the renaissance of Catholic higher education called for in Ex corde Ecclesiae. The Department of Nursing at Franciscan University of Steubenville facilitates the educational preparation of women and men as generalists on the undergraduate level and advance practice nurses on the graduate level in the professional practice of nursing. To this end, the program is built on Catholic, Christian beliefs and values and emphasizes the dignity of the human person from conception until natural death. In advancing this mission, the Department of Nursing is centered on nursing as a healing ministry, which is focused on the health of the person in their environment. Faculty at Franciscan University have the unique opportunity to promote learning in a Catholic, Christian setting where faith, morals, professional standards, and evidence-based practice are integrated in order to support the development of professional, ethical nursing practice in an increasingly complex healthcare setting. Qualifications:

  1. Excited to serve the university mission.
  2. Minimal master's degree in nursing from accredited program; doctoral degree or in progress doctoral work preferred.
  3. Current unencumbered registered nurse license to practice in Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania (ability to practice in Ohio upon hire is the minimum requirement).
  4. At least 2 years of clinical practice in an area of clinical nursing (experience across the lifespan accepted) that includes performance of basic nursing skills.
  5. At least 2 years of educational experience in a clinical or institutional setting. Simulation experience preferred.
  6. Proficiency in basic nursing clinical skills (e.g., sterile dressings, indwelling catheter placement, nasogastric tube insertion, medication administration, etc.).
  7. Experience implementing evidence-based practice into nursing care.
  8. Ability to contribute to curriculum development and implementation.
  9. Communicates and collaborates effectively with team members.
  10. Ability to support the mission of the University.
Responsibilities:
  1. Provide students with an engaged, innovative, and rigorous education grounded in current best practices in nursing.
  2. Be able to articulate for students how Catholic social teaching and the Catholic intellectual tradition enlivens the nurse role in a professionally appropriate way.
  3. Study and implement the very best research in the nursing field in a way that is suited to bachelor-level nursing students.
  4. Develop objectives, policies, procedures, and schedules for class, clinical, and laboratory experiences for assigned course.
  5. Instruct, clinically supervise, and evaluate students according to assigned course/clinical objectives.
  6. Be a present and visible leader of the nursing program on campus and with other key stakeholders.
  7. Actively collaborate with colleagues in the Department of Nursing and across University committees.
  8. Participate in extending the program and university mission through community service in the nursing role.
  9. Engage and support students as an advisor and mentor who helps them discern their personal vocation.
  10. Promote the program for prospective students and the public.
  11. Adhere to faculty responsibilities as outlined in University Faculty Handbook.
  12. Contribute to ongoing program assessment.
  13. Perform other duties assigned by Department Chair.
Research and/or Clinical Practice (Performs several of the following)
  1. Maintain clinical practice in your area of interest if/when time permits.
  2. Serve as a role model, content expert, and mentor.
  3. Obtain/maintain specialty certification or education above position qualifications.
  4. Perform and/or participate in research to increase self-knowledge and promote evidence-based practice.
